Cloudaction Organizes Earthquake Relief for Nepal-India Region, Raises +$5k in 24 Hours

TULSA, Okla., USA, and PUNE, India, April 28, 2015 – Last Saturday’s Nepal earthquake was a half a world away from Tulsa, Okla., but its devastation was felt in the offices of Tulsa-based Cloudaction and its sister division Stonebridge Consulting.

While the epicenter of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake was in Nepal, the quake also hit three Indian states bordering Nepal – Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Bihar is the home state of Cloudaction President Samir Kumar. Kumar’s parents and siblings still live in Patna, the capital city of Bihar. More than 60 people in Bihar have died as a result of the earthquake.

“Thankfully, my folks are okay,” Kumar said. “But many thousands of people in Bihar were not as fortunate. They’ve lost their homes, their livelihoods, everything. The situation is extremely dire, especially for children and the elderly.”

As soon as news of the quake reached the U.S., Kumar was on the telephone with businessman and friend Ram N Kumar, the founder and CEO of New Delhi-based digital marketing firm Marketech. Like Samir, Ram is from Bihar.

Samir’s plan was simple: Raise $5,000 USD within 24 hours and get the funds to the people who needed it in Bihar. Ram’s Centre for Civil Initiatives organization would manage the funds on the ground in India and ensure that 100 percent of the donated amount is spent on delivering immediate relief: food packets, candles, matches, chlorine tablets, tents and re-hydration salts.

Around noon on Monday, Apr. 27th, Samir sent out word to his Cloudaction and Stonebridge colleagues by email explaining the urgency of the situation and asking for support. The response was immediate and overwhelming.
“Our U.S. team donated more than $3,000 within four hours, and with the support from the Cloudaction India team in Pune, we quickly hit and surpassed our $5,000 goal. That money is now in the hands of people on the ground in Bihar, helping them survive this catastrophe and take the first steps in rebuilding their lives.”

Samir said that though he is humbled by his colleagues’ response, he is not really surprised. “We have a great group of caring people at Cloudaction and Stonebridge,” he said. “Our companies are known in the market for going the extra mile for our customers. It’s incredibly inspiring to me to know that they are willing to do the same for people in need half a world away.”
